Mission Statement

South Asian Feminist Activism Archive (SAFAA)

The South Asian Feminist Activism Archive (SAFAA) is dedicated to the digital preservation and public availability of extraordinary feminist protest posters from India. These posters – often deteriorating and unavailable to audiences outside of the localities in which they were produced – detail an important history of grassroots feminist activism regarding social issues such as women’s health, sexual and domestic violence, female infanticide, as well as educational and legal inequities. Working with feminist organizations like Olakh and Sahiyar, Dr. Garlough and Dr. Shelat and a team of graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin Madison have sought to preserve, translate, catalogue, and publicize the existence of these important artifacts that combine art and activism.
